What toppings to add?
You can really put on top of the pizza what ever you fancy. We used tomato puree but you could use bbq sauce if you prefer.
Ingredients
Tomato puree – Put this in a small bowl so that it is easy for your children to access. If your child is able then leave it in the tube. Maybe start with them owl and move to the tube as they become more able.
Cheddar cheese – You can either grate this and put the grated cheese in a bowl. Or if you prefer and your child is able get them to grate the cheddar. You could start with them using a rotary grater or use a standard grater. It doesn’t really mater which they use as long as they are safe and having fun.
Mozzarella – Leave this as a ball for your child to tear. This will be quite sensory, as the cheese can be quite wet and cold from the fridge. Each child is different so maybe tear for them if you prefer. We are building confidence in our children and this can be built up slowly, no need to rush.
Mixed herbs – Put a small amount in a small bowl. Your child can then practice their fine motor skills by pinching the herbs to put on the pizza. This helps build up the pincer grip which is needed when a child is writing and dressing themselves.
Red Pepper – This is great for developing scissor skills. The pieces can be as big or small as you like. There are no rules as long as you are enjoying the process.
Equipment
Scissors – Use a pair of scissors that are safe for your child. They need to be a smaller pair of scissors to make it easier for your child to hold. Scissors that are too big will be too heavy and your child will loose interest.
Cutters – Large biscuit cutters work well for this. If you do not have this then a plastic bowl upside down would also work. Have fun using different shapes. You can either use it as an opportunity to learn shapes. Or build creativity and make dinosaur shaped pizzas!
Benefits
Using the scissors and cutters will help strengthen fine motor muscles. Learning to use scissors can be quite a difficult task. Some children will take to it quickly others will take a little while.
Children all learn at their own pace, so be lead by them.
Tearing the mozzarella will also help strengthen those fine motor muscles.
